I attended the University of California at Berkeley. I majored in forestry. After graduation I worked for the U.S. Forest Service in McCloud California, Big Bar California, Gunnison Colorado, and Placerville California. Then in 1981 I moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area and found a place to live in Berkeley, California. I went to junior college then and I
studied computer programming languages. Then, in 1982, I got a job as a computer programmer for a company called Computer Usage Company.I was a tutor for a blind girl who was studying computer science at Laney College in Oakland, California in the spring of 1982. One Saturday morning I met her down at the old Laney College Computer center and I did a little tutoring with her. There happened to be there that morning a woman named Gail who got a job for this company in San Francisco called Computer Usage Company. She pointed out that her company was hiring computer programmers and as a result of that I sent them my resume. They called me to come in for an interview and I ended up getting a job as a computer programmer there. That was my first job as a computer programmer. I worked for Computer Usage Company from June 1982 until July 1985.
